Giulia Lombardo

Giulia is a postdoctoral research associate in the Stress, Psychiatry, and Immunology (SPI)-Lab, and in the Psychoimmunometabolix and Interaction with the Environment (PIXIE)-Lab at the Department of Psychological Medicine, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London.

Giulia started working as a research assistant while completing her master's degree in psychology in Italy. Then, she completed her PhD in identifying sex-specific biological differences in major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression. She is passionate about psychoneuroimmunology, especially in deepening the knowledge of sex-specific biomarkers in major depressive disorder, in particular sex hormones and inflammatory biomarkers, and of sex differences in response to anti-inflammatory compounds in individuals not responding to conventional antidepressants.

She strongly believes in the need for sex-specific precision psychiatry. Also, the study of biological dynamics in psychiatric illnesses will help in creating sex-specific medicine and tailored treatments to offer the best rehabilitation pathway for those individuals in need.

Giulia is also one of the main academic leads of the Immunopsychiatry Meetings organised by the PIXIELab, which represents an opportunity for discussion and debate with the aim to create an international network of Immunopsychiatry.
